Payment will be charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase. Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period. You can turn off auto-renewal at any time in your iTunes Store settings.

Any unused portion of a free trial will be forfeited upon purchasing a subscription.

If you prefer to stay on the free version, that's perfectly fine — core features remain available at no cost.
