In short
Rankings are facts from Apple's public charts. Revenue, the small and simple score, rising apps and gaps are our own calculations on top of them.
Revenue is always an estimate shown as a range with a confidence label. Where the data is too thin, we show no estimate.
Data sources
Rankings come from Apple's public App Store RSS charts: Top Free, Top Grossing and Top Paid, for each country and category.
App details (name, developer, category, price, rating, version dates, size, description and screenshots) come from Apple's public iTunes Lookup API.
Reviews used in Anatomy reports come from the public customer review feed of the App Store.
Google Play charts, install ranges and ratings are collected separately, in a smaller set of countries. The two stores are never mixed, and there is no revenue estimate for Android. We are not affiliated with Apple or Google.
Update frequency
Charts are collected once a day and stored per UTC calendar day. Every list shows the date of its data.
App details are refreshed every 7 days, and every 30 days for apps that left the charts.
Rising apps need at least 10 days of history for a country before they are shown.
Revenue estimate
Apple does not publish app revenue. We estimate monthly gross store revenue in US dollars, before Apple's commission, from the Top Grossing rank only.
A calibrated curve maps rank to revenue. It is anchored on public benchmark points for US iPhone apps: for example overall rank 5 is about $29M a month, rank 250 about $1.2M and rank 1,000 about $280K.
Other countries are scaled from the US curve (Japan about 31% of the US level, Germany and the UK about 8.5%, Türkiye about 0.7%). Category charts are converted to an equivalent overall rank first.
We show a point estimate with a range. For the US overall chart the range runs from about half to a little over double the point estimate, and it is wider for other countries, categories and deeper ranks.
Confidence is "medium" only for the top of the US and Japan charts, otherwise "low". Below $500 a month, or without calibration, we show no estimate.
Revenue bands
- B1< $10K
- B2$10K–$50K
- B3$50K–$250K
- B4$250K–$1M
- B5$1M–$3M
- B6$3M–$10M
- B7> $10M
Bands are derived from the same estimate.
Small and simple score
A 0-100 score that shows how realistic it is for one person or a small team to build a comparable app. Five parts are weighted as below.
Score weights
- Demand30%
- Developer size25%
- Rating count20%
- Price model15%
- Download size10%
An app counts as small and simple when its score is at least 65, its developer has at most 2 apps in the charts over 30 days, and it has fewer than 10,000 ratings from a major storefront.
Rising apps
We compare an app's rank now with its rank 7 days earlier, smoothed over 3 days. The score is log2(previous rank / current rank), so climbing from 100 to 50 counts as much as 20 to 10.
An app is listed when it gained at least 5 positions and scores at least 0.5. Apps that were not in the list before count as new entries.
Abandoned popular apps
These are apps in the top 100 that have not shipped an update for 365 days or more (180 and 730 days are also available). Apps with a rating below 4.0 are flagged.
App details must be at most 10 days old, so an old record cannot create a false positive.
Cross-country gaps
A gap candidate is an app that was in the top 50 of a source country (the United States) on at least 5 of the last 7 days and has not appeared in the target country's charts for 30 days.
We then check the target store when possible. Candidates are never promises: local service categories such as food, navigation, medical, sports and shopping are excluded.
Anatomy reports
A report reads up to 500 recent reviews of an app in one country, keeps the reviews rated 3 stars or lower and sends up to 200 of them to an AI model.
The model groups complaints into themes. Counts and shares are computed by our code, not by the model, and every quote is checked to appear word for word in the original review.
A Build Kit prompt is written from the themes. Reports are cached for 7 days and show their date.
Limits and caveats
- Revenue figures are estimates, not measurements, and can be off by a factor of two or more.
- The App Store and Google Play are covered. Chart position is not the same as downloads or profit. Revenue is estimated for the App Store only.
- Ratings are per storefront, so a rating count can come from another country than the one you are viewing.
- Revenue estimates exist for Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States. Other countries show no estimate.
- Reports describe what reviewers wrote. They are a starting point for research, not market proof.
